Joe Biden Drops Out of Presidential Race, Endorses VP Kamala Harris

Date:

Joe Biden officially declared his withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential Election, swiftly followed by his endorsement of Kamala Harris as his successor. Biden highlighted choosing Harris as Vice President as one of his most pivotal decisions. This surprise announcement, coming mere months before the election, dramatically reshaped the political landscape, altering the expected course of the pivotal campaign. The Clintons also threw their support behind Kamala to lead the Democratic Party.

Despite stepping away from the presidential race, Biden affirmed his commitment to finishing his current term in office. He immediately backed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic challenge against Donald Trump, effectively positioning her as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination at the upcoming August convention in Chicago.

Biden’s decision followed increasing pressure from fellow Democrats after a contentious debate with Trump on June 27, where the 81-year-old president struggled and failed to effectively counter Trump’s arguments. Before his announcement, Biden and Harris engaged in several discussions, highlighting the careful consideration behind his departure.

In response, Harris praised Biden’s decision as a “selfless and patriotic act,” pledging to secure the Democratic nomination and unite both the party and the nation to defeat Donald Trump and his agenda.

This development signals a significant change in the tumultuous campaign, occurring in the aftermath of an attempted attack on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally just a week earlier.
